Vico Magistretti - Postwar Italian Modernism

Vico Magistretti (October 6, 1920 – September 19, 2006) was an Italian furniture designer and architect. At the time, Magistretti was designing some of the most unique structures in Italy and was chosen to be a part of the group of architects that designed buildings for the experimental neighborhood of QT8. Later in his career, Magistretti went on to design furniture and appliances for renowned Italian companies such as Cassina and Alias where he was able to win several awards for his designs.

Vico Magistretti was the son of Italian architect Piere Guillio. Magistretti studied at Politecnico di Torino until the Second World War began, but was forced to move to Switzerland to avoid being deported. During his stay in Switzerland, Magistretti took courses at Champ Universitaire Italien in Lausanne. It was also in Switzerland where Magistretti met Ernesto Rogers, an architect that Magistretti extensively collaborated with and was very much inspired by. In 1945, Magistetti moved back to Milan where he finished his studies at Politecnico di Milano and immediately went to work for his father’s company.

In the 1950s Magistretti began to work outside of the field of architecture and into the world of furniture design. Magistretti started to make a name for himself by designing furniture for companies such as Cassina, Fritz Hansen, Kartell, Alias, and many more world renowned furniture companies. His “Carimate” chair produced by Cassina was his first world famous chair that eventually became an icon and a best seller for years to come.

Magistretti received his first notable award in 1948 when he won the Gran Premio at the 8th Triennale. He later went on to win awards at the Triennale on multiple other occasions as well as awards from the Compasso d’Oro and Chartered Society of Industrial Artists and Designers.

Magistretti is considered by many to be a leader in the Postwar Modernist Movement of Italy. His influence and innovation in modern design can be seen through the minimalist designs that he created for companies like Cassina and Alias. Although his work with Alias is lesser known, he created some of the most interesting and unique pieces, blending lacquered wood and laminate to make a sleek and minimalist silhouette. We have an excellent piece currently available in our shop from his Broomstick series with Alias. To purchase or find more info, click the "View product" button below!
